Laser Engraving 101: What You Can (and Can't) Personalize

We get a version of the same question from people who've never ordered a laser-engraved gift before: can you engrave this? The honest answer is usually yes, but the results — and the process — look pretty different depending on what "this" actually is.
Wood, Leather, and Slate: The Reliable Favorites
Wood is where laser engraving shines. Cutting boards, keepsake boxes, coasters — the laser burns a clean, dark line into the surface, and the contrast against the natural grain is part of what makes it look intentional rather than printed on. Leather and slate behave similarly: both take detail well and develop a slightly weathered, permanent look that actually improves with use rather than fading.
Metal and Glass: Different Process, Same Payoff

Metal tumblers and glassware need a bit more care. Rather than burning the surface the way wood does, the laser etches a frosted, permanent mark into the material itself — which is why an engraved tumbler holds up to daily washing without the design ever peeling or fading. It's a different mechanism than wood engraving, but the result is just as durable.
What Doesn't Engrave Well
Not every material is a good fit. Very thin or flexible plastics can warp under the laser's heat, and some coated or painted surfaces engrave unevenly if the coating reacts differently than the material underneath. If you're not sure whether something will engrave cleanly, that's exactly the kind of question worth asking before ordering — a quick check saves both of us a wasted piece.
The Golden Spirit Crafts Difference
Every engraving order gets tested against the actual material before we commit to a final pass, not just approved from a design file. That's the same care we put into DTF printing, just applied to a different medium — checking the real thing, not assuming it'll turn out fine.
Whether it's a wedding gift, a retirement keepsake, or a custom piece for your own home, we treat engraving with the same attention as anything else that leaves our shop.
